World’s Ugliest Dog 2010: a Chihuahua

Just a few week after everyone’s favorite ex-World’s Ugliest Dog Miss Ellie crossed the rainbow bridge, a new queen has been selected at the annual ugliest dog contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in in Petaluma, California. This time it’s not a Chinese crested, but a chihuahua named Princess Abby, and I have to say that despite her malformed body, I find her cute. Maybe she should also run for the cutest dog title as Miss Ellie did.

Did you know that 25 June (next Friday) will be Take Your Dog To Work Day? Since 1999, this event has demonstrated that dogs make great companions, thereby encouraging their adoption from shelters. Beagles are not too common among famous people’s dogs, but there are some celebrity beagle owners. Let’s see who they are!

1. Lyndon Baines Johnson: The former US President had several beagles, the most famous ones being simply called Him and Her.

The pug romance continues

Jenny, the famous stroller-pushing pug seems to share Puglet‘s feelings, so the pug romance continues. On her website, Jenny expressed her gratitude for the rubber chicken sent by Puglet as a present, and she was also impressed by the haiku Puglet written to her. Needless to say, this is great news for Puglet. I wish them all the best, and of course, I’ll report here if there are new developments around this blooming relationship.
Until then, here’s a picture to prove that Jenny likes that rubber chicken indeed.

West Highland White Terriers are far from being the most popular dog breeds when it comes to celebrities, but there are some famous westie owners.

1. Robert Pattinson - The Twilight star was recently quoted saying that the only emotional connection of relevance he had ever had was with his dog. His westie, Patty crossed the rainbow bridge more than a year ago.

2. Christian Serratos – Robert Pattinson is not the only Twilight star who likes westies. Christian Serratos also owns a westie named Bolt.

“Play dead” beagle beats “I love you” pug

The Late Show with David Letterman recently started its Ultimate Stupid Trick Tournament both for pets and humans. The latest news about the competition is that the famous “play dead” beagle has beaten the late Odie, better known as “I love you” pug (see videos below). Now it’s “play dead” beagle vs. tree-trimmer dog, and the winner will compete against a human in the finals. You can cast your vote on the tournament’s website.

Meet Lulu, the World’s Oldest Dog (in the pub)

Lulu, a 21-year old British Beagle cross may be the World’s oldest dog. The deaf and almost blind veteran pooch has been a regular pub goer all her life alongside owner Travis Buckley, a resident of Coventry, England. All the local barflies know Lulu well, she must be a local celebrity there. The previous record holder, Otto, died in January at 21.
According to the traditional way of calculating dog years (multiply by seven), Lulu is 147-years old, but according to this chart, and considering Lulu a medium-sized dog, she’s only 138. Guinness World Records has not yet confirmed Lulu as the new record holder, but her chances seem quite good.

Maltese = Hitler according to PETA

Poor Maltese...

The above poster by PETA, presenting a Maltese dog as Hitler, seems to suggest that people preferring purebred dogs are nazis. Although Britain’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) rejected a complaint from the Kennel Club that the ad was offensive, I really think PETA should stop stigmatizing anyone who disagrees with them as fascists. I have 2 adopted mutts and I also love purebreds. So what?
Moreover, the poor Maltese in the picture doesn’t look anything like Hitler.

Mario Lopez adopts a French bulldog

The Celebrity French Bulldog Owners’ Club has a new member: TV host Mario Lopez adopted a frenchie. Mario chose the breed on the advice of Oprah Winfrey, and named his French bulldog Julio Cesar Chavez Lopez. Watch Mario introducing Julio in the video below.

Dog swallows diamond

The latest odd dog news is that a Maryland jeweler’s golden retriever swallowed a $20,000 diamond. The 3-carat stone fell on the floor right next to Sollie, who ate it right away. The jeweler, Mr Kaufmann, had to examine Sollie’s stool for 3 days until the lost diamond resurfaced. Better watch out next time when Sollie’s around!
